Today we're going to talk about wax guards or wax filters and the importance of changing them. If your hearing instruments ever feel like you're not hearing as well out of them or they just seem to stop working, chances are the filters have gotten plugged.

First we're going to look at the receiver of the canal.

You'll need to take the ear dome off of it. This can be done by just peeling it off.

If you look down into the filter and you're unable to see deep into it because it's blocked (or if there's discoloring of it such as brown, orange, or yellow) we're going to want to change the filter.

You'll take a new filter out of it's pack. On one end it has the new filter on it and on the other end it has where you can place the old one.

You'll attached the empty end to the old filter. You'll hear a snap to know that it's attached. Pull it away and it's now taken the old one off.

Attach the new one the same way with the other side.

You'll want to throw the old one away as not to get confused with the other new ones.

You'll want to then put the ear dome back over.

This same process works for custom in-ear hearing devices as well. The only difference is that there wouldn't be an ear dome to remove.

If you're having troubles hearing out of your devices, after changing the battery, the next troubleshooting step would be to change the filter.
